Featherbed, down or feather mattress toppers are a common name of a soft mattress topper that is manufactured with the use of bird’s down and feathers. As down/feather mattress toppers are the softest option available, they are used to add softness to hard and firm mattress. These are lightweight toppers that are easy to carry.
How it is Constructed?
Featherbed/Down mattress toppers are usually made up of combination of geese and duck feathers and down usually found under their feathers to maintain loft. Feathers made the bulk of the filling with down as a smaller portion.
Health and Safety
Even though, featherbed toppers are not effective for back and shoulder pain relief but they are reported mostly effective for minimizing pressure points. If you are using hypoallergenic cotton cover, they are also effective for people with allergy. Feather quills can pop up and can cause pain after regular use.
Firmness
Featherbed/Down mattress toppers are considered as the softest toppers. They are not firm enough as support and loft is often lacking. They are not a good fit for people with weight as it compresses under the weight.
Pros
User’s feedback about its ability to minimize pressure points is above average. They are also very easy to move around. Heating issues are also not reported with very few complaints about heat trap. The biggest advantage is their light weight that makes them very easy to carry. They can also fit properly to the bed and don’t sleep around. Complaints about initial odor are also less than latex and memory foam toppers. Durability and longevity is also rated moderately if not highly praised.
Cons
They are not easy to maintain and clean. They often lose their shape and require constant fluffing and movement to maintain proper shape and loft. Machine wash can make them lumpy and can significantly reduce their life. They also fail to isolate the motion and often considered unfriendly if you are sharing with your partner. Complaints about popping quills and loss of loft with time are also reported.
Lifespan and Warranty
Lifespan and warranty is almost similar to other common types that is 3 to 5 years, but users have complained about reduced loft and thickness with time and quills of feathers popping up usually after shaking.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Featherbed/Down mattress toppers are usually not easy to maintain and clean as machine wash can considerably reduce their life. Only dry cleaning is recommended. It is also required to fluff and shake to keep their loft.
