Latex mattresses are made from several layers of latex foam, which are encased in a latex cover making them incredibly comfortable. The mattress is made from natural materials, ensuring that they are perfect for eco-friendly consumers.
There are remarkably few additives used to make these mattresses which are beneficial for everyone. There are no springs in the design of the mattress, which is another factor behind the comfort level.
It is made using a unique technique, where the milky white latex mixture is poured into a mold. Once settled a vacuum is used to remove any air bubbles and evenly distributes the liquid latex through the mold. CO2 is then pumped through the rods, which freezes the foam and ensures that consistency is even.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Latex Mattress

Advantages:

  • No sinking or sagging
  • Extremely comfortable
  • No bedbugs or dust mites
  • Long lasting
  • Tailor made firmness
  • Well ventilated

Disadvantages:

  • Expensive
  • Requires a firm base
  • Can be hot to sleep on
  • Compression is an issue
  • Heavy to move

Why to Use

They are beneficial for the environment and they are incredibly comfortable. The naturally comforting material that is used for the mattress enables you to sleep in any position.
Latex is also hyper allergenic, resistant to dust mites and incredibly breathable. In the summer months, you are kept cool, and in the winter the mattress will retain heat. The latex mattress is considered to be expensive, and this is due to the pure latex that is used for the mattress. Although the material is far more expensive, you will find that it is top quality.

Weight, Size and Aroma

All latex products do have a distinctive aroma, and how strong it will be depends on the materials that are used for manufacturing.
They also do not need to be flipped and have a unique breathing capability, which uses open cell structure. The mattress can be hot to sleep on, and can cause the user to sweat, however, in the winter months the mattress is warm and comforting. This style of mattress is far heavier than traditional mattresses and is based on the firmness. A full sized mattress is considered far too heavy for one person to move.

Firmness

As a rule, you should purchase the same firmness that your current mattress has, but bear in mind that latex will feel different. If you are new to latex, you may need to seek professional help and advice regarding the best mattress for your needs.
The firmness of these mattresses is measured in ILD or indentation load deflection as it is known. The number that is used in the guide refers to the pounds required to compress the foam; therefore, the lower numbers are softer.

  • Super Plush – 14
  • Plush – 19
  • Soft – 24
  • Medium – 28
  • Firm – 32
  • Extra Firm – 36
  • Super Firm – 40-44

Over time, the latex will soften in the middle, but far more slowly than conventional mattresses, which is why they are so popular. Using an electric blanket is possible, as long as you follow the standard safety instructions that are issued.
You can easily place the mattress on a platform bed, or a box spring bed depending on what you want. Placing the mattress on the floor is not advised as it can make it uncomfortable and uneven, also causing the mattress to age far quicker.

Safety and Health Risks

The latex mattresses are treated with fire retardant and they are not flammable. The latex mattress is excellent for allergy sufferers and can help with numerous problems and issues. Debates are often common amongst parents who want to know if this style of mattress is safe for their baby.
Studies have shown that in rare cases some babies have had an allergic reaction to the latex. This is uncommon, but can happen. As with all baby products you need to be cautious and monitor the reaction on your baby’s skin.

Bed Bugs and Dust Mites

One issue that you will not have with a latex mattress is bed bugs and dust mites as they find it incredibly difficult to survive on the latex. The design of the mattress does not allow for the bed bugs to thrive and lay their eggs, which is why more people are choosing this style of mattress.

Pain Reduction

People who suffer with back pain can often trace the problem back to their mattress and sleeping position. Therefore, a quality mattress such as a latex mattress is ideal and will not cause back, neck or hip pain.
This style of mattress helps to alleviate any issues that you have with your back, and is considered to be beneficial for cradling your body. As you sleep it will feel buoyant, and allow you to sleep in any position including on your side.

Cleaning and Care

There are several ways that you can easily clean your latex mattress and ensure that it remains in excellent condition. Routinely wiping the mattress is necessary, but you must not place too much water on the mattress or it will spoil.

Lifespan

There is no guarantee with any mattress that you purchase; however, the latex mattresses are thought to last far longer. Some manufacturers will place 20 year warranties on the mattresses, which is a bold move, but displays their faith in the product. As with all mattresses you need to replace the latex mattress when you feel that it is worn, damaged or too old.
