Listening to Music While Sleeping

Sleep is an essential part of everyone`s health and productivity. Although it may appear as passive, some activities take place during sleep. The central nervous system becomes inactive thereby relaxing the muscles, and the heart rate and blood pressure slow down. The eyes shut, and the body goes into a state of atonia which means the muscles are temporarily paralyzed, and consciousness is practically suspended.

There are different views as to whether listening to music while sleeping is right for you or not. While many benefits come from listening to music, there are also steps that should be taken to ensure the individual is safe from any impending danger such as electrocution or asphyxiation.

Benefits of sleeping while listening to music

Studies have shown that listening to music stimulates the production of a “happy” chemical by the brain known as serotonin. Due to the pressures of this fast-paced life, tension can build up in our brains which can cause insomnia and other sleep disorders. Some people find it hard to quiet their minds and need help to relax their muscles and ease themselves into a sleep mode.

To reduce the effects of sleep disorders and improve the quality of your sleep, listen to low timbre and peaceful music over an extended period. Some say that they wake up in a better mood after listening to music while others claim to remember what they heard while they were asleep.

People who suffer from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) may also benefit from slow, soothing sounds that remind them of happier days and put them at ease psychologically. Music has been known to increase their chances of falling asleep sooner and longer.

If you live in a noisy neighborhood such as near roads where there are traffic noises, or you are unlucky and get noisy neighbors, you can choose noise-cancelling headphones or listen to soothing music to counter the noise.

Dangers of sleeping with headphones on

  • Earwax build-up –our ears are designed to self-clean. The wax may build up if the ear canals are blocked continuously by earbuds. Cleaning out the wax can be a very unpleasant affair. If the buds do not fit well, it can cause pressure on the ear canal which can lead to Necrosis of the skin.
  • It might end up canceling safety or important noises – if you wear noise-canceling headphones, you might not be able to hear if the smoke alarm goes off or if you have a baby and they wake up crying.
  • Asphyxiation – although not common, headphone cords can get tangled around your neck which can result in choking to death
  • Electrocution –there have been cases of people who were electrocuted because they were charging their devices and listening to music at the same time.

Listen to music safely as you sleep

  • Radio – Instead of using corded or big, uncomfortable headphones to ease yourself to sleep, you could listen to music on the radio. This works best if you are alone since you do not want to keep other people awake with your music. Choose a channel that plays slow music and keeps the volume low
  • Bedphones – as the name suggests, bedphones are headphones that are specially designed for use in bed. These devices are lightweight in design which means that you’ll hardly feel them and are engineered to deliver soothing sounds. They come in handy when you want to mask your partner’s snoring sounds. People who suffer from tinnitus will also find them helpful thanks to their ability to mask the ringing. This helps you fall asleep fast and peacefully.

Conclusion

Whether to listen to music or not while sleeping depends on you. There are those who awake at the slightest sound and would not find this beneficial. Otherwise, listening to music is known to reduce stress levels while helping you relax and fight depression. It is believed that music helps in pain management and some nurses play music to ailing patients and record improved symptoms. It also improves productivity greatly in people as the brain tend to realize the happy chemical – serotonin.
