There is a variety of important factors you need to think about when you are looking to purchase a latex mattress. These include the type of latex, the construction of the latex, it’s support, durability, pain relief, heat retention, off-gassing, density, ILD and the type of foundation it will need.

Type of Latex

Natural

Natural latex is the milky sap product that is extracted from rubber trees. It is said that rubber trees were originally grown in Brazil, but now they are planted all around the globe and are most abundant in places like South East Asia and Africa.

Natural latex mattress are naturally springy and bouncy with needing the addition of coils, springs or added materials. This type of latex is known to have better durability, more resistance and is less likely to experience sinkage that causes long term denting.

Saying that however, lying on a natural latex mattress can feel like you are comfortably sinking into the bed, but with a firmness that also supports your body. It is also very clean – it’s hypoallergenic, resistant to dust mites and is antimicrobial.

Synthetic

Synthetic latex is mostly made from petroleum by-products which can sometimes be mixed with some natural latex. It is made by polymerizing a monomer that has been mixed with surfactants. As synthetic latex is based with chemicals, it can often break down more easily and more quickly than natural latex.

This type of material can also be more susceptible to off-gassing and stronger odors. However, synthetic latex does feature the same basic properties as natural latex does, but is a much cheaper alternative in many cases.

Blended

Blended latex is the result of combining some natural latex with some synthetic latex. The benefits of a blended latex mattress include being durable, having less chemical compounds which also means less odor, often has better firmness AND is less expensive than a 100% natural latex option.

Latex Construction

Latex foam can be constructed in two different ways, these include: Dunlop and Talalay.

Dunlop

The Dunlop process includes foaming and pouring the liquid latex into molds. The molds are then covered over and go through a vulcanization oven on a conveyor belt type system.

After this stage is complete, the molds and foam are then thoroughly washed and rinsed to produce squeaky clean latex foam. This process is more energy efficient and results in a foam that is super dense at the base and soft and comfortable at the top. If you are looking for a mattress that is firm and supportive, then a Dunlop mattress will be a great choice for you.

Talalay

The Talalay process uses much more energy than the Dunlop process however it provides a foam that is consistent and smooth. However this process results in sections of latex which have to be seamed together which has been reported by some to be uncomfortable. If you are someone that is looking for a softer mattress, then a Talalay mattress will be a suitable option for you.

This process starts the same as Dunlop, with the liquid latex being foamed and poured into molds. However here, the molds are only filled up to about halfway full. Then the mold is cover which allows the latex to expand.

Once it has expanded, it is then frozen and carbon dioxide is pumped through the material which gels the two together. Then as with the Dunlop process, the latex is vulcanized and washed.

Support

Dunlop mattresses are more dense than talalay ones, so are more firm and provide good support. However talalay mattress offer great support in their comfort layer and are good for evenly spreading your weight and reducing pressure in key pressure point areas.

Durability

Latex mattresses do often perform above average when it comes to their durability and lifespan. The properties in natural latex mattresses make it strong and long-lasting. Natural latex mattresses are often much more durable than synthetic or blended ones as they have a higher-density and more elasticity.

One point we must make about the longevity of latex mattresses, is that they can sometimes experience degrading of materials which could cause it to lose some support or even sag. The good news? Often with latex mattresses, you have the option to simply replace that one layer, rather than forking out for an entirely new mattresses. By doing so, you will feel like you have a brand new mattress at just a fraction of the cost.

Pain Relief

If you are someone who suffers with pain or pressure in areas such as your back, neck, hips or shoulders, then it is vital that you shop for a mattress that helps to relieve such pain. Much of this pain can actually be caused by sleeping on a mattress that just isn’t right for you.

In order to reduce the pain you feel in these places, you must ensure that your entire body from your head to feet come in contact with your mattress when you lie down. This is so that your body weight can be evenly distributed across the mattress, whilst it also gives you full support throughout your body, and helps to properly align your spine.

When your spinal cord is correctly positioned and aligned, your neck, back, and hips will be too. So are latex mattresses a good option for relieving and reducing pain? Yes, and in fact, latex mattresses are often considered the best type of mattress for people who suffer with pain in their back.

This is because of their spring action which provides relief, and generally they give full body support due to the right amount of contouring. Medium to firm latex mattresses do often perform above average when it comes to alleviating pressure and pain.

Heat Retention

Latex mattresses are great if you are looking for a cool and comfortable night’s sleep. Misconceptions are made about the heat retention of latex, but it actually sleeps much cooler and is more breathable than mattresses made from memory foam or other materials. Many latex mattresses are actually designed with an open cell structure which means they experience heightened airflow and a cooler sleep.

Although latex mattresses are great for airflow and cooling, if you want even more breathability, then purchase a latex mattress that also has a moisture wicking or breathable top cover.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is strongly associated mostly with memory foam mattresses and for the most part, latex mattress experience very minimal odors when they are new. Latex mattress that are made from natural latex have little to no off-gassing at all due to their 100% natural properties. Blended latex mattresses can have slightly more off-gassing and synthetic latex mattresses will have a higher amount of off-gassing.

Off-gassing occurs due to the chemical compounds which are used in the making of mattresses, which is why a synthetic mattress will experience more odor due to the petrochemicals inside. Although synthetic latex mattresses will off-gass more than natural ones, the odor is still significantly less than that of other mattress type including memory foam.

Density

Put simply, density is how much a piece of the latex in a latex mattress weighs. To calculate the density, you divide the mass by the total volume. The number is then expressed in pounds by cubic foot. For examples, if the density of a mattress is worked out to be 3 pounds per foot, then this means the density is 3 pounds per foot. Latex mattresses are known for their good density, and Dunlop latex has a higher density than Talalay ones. The higher the density often means the better durability it has, meaning the longer it will last.

ILD

As well as the density measurement, there is another measurement of a mattresses’ firmness known as Indentation Load Deflection (ILD). Generally a mattress that has an ILD measurement of between 14 to 22 is meant to be a soft mattress, whereas a mattress with an ILD of between 23 to 29 is medium.

If you are looking for a firm mattress then you will need one with an ILD of between 30 to 37 and if you like an extra firm mattress, then you’ll need one with an ILD of 38 or higher. The average and most popular ILD is a between 25 to 35. The ILD of a mattress is measured by putting a weight that measures 50 square inches on top of it. Then, you must determine what amount of pressure is needed to make an indent of 25% to the mattress.

Foundations

Although a latex mattress doesn’t necessarily require a foundation, it is highly recommended for increased height and extra comfort. So what foundations work best? The foundation must not be saggy or insecure and instead must be strong, stable and supportive. Slat foundations are suitable, but the slats must be no more than eight inches apart otherwise the support will not be adequate. Plywood and platform beds are normally fine too.

It would be a great idea to first discuss or research the type of foundation the specific brand of latex mattress you are buying recommends you use. This is especially important for warranty purposes.

Latex vs Memory Foam Mattresses

They have a reputation for providing great pressure relief and also a good amount of comfort. They have a slow response time which means they contour well to each body shape and weight. They can be good for those who suffer with back pain or people who carry heavier or excess weight.

However they are made with harsh chemicals which result in a high level of off-gassing. In some cases, the chemicals can even cause the sleeper to experience headaches, itchy eyes and respiratory problems.

Latex mattresses are long-lasting, dense, and durable. They are springy, resilient and supportive.
